Narnu & Tjilbruke

A Tale of Two Dreaming Heroes

Kaurna, South Australia - 2018

This animation is based on Kaurna Nation knowledge and stories of Nganu and Tjilbruke. Two Dreaming heroes.

Tjilbruke is a much respected elder. He has a favourite nephew Kulultuwi. One day Kulultuwi is out hunting the same emu as his uncle Tjilbruke. As Tjilbruki is the elder, it is against the law for Kulultiwi to hunt the same emu. The two make a deal that allows Kulultuwi to continue the hunt. Two jealous half-brothers of Kulultuwi see this and take matters into their own hands, killing Kulutuwi in the process. In grief Tjilbruke carries Kulultuwi’s body south to its final resting place.

The story has been developed through partnership between Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi Aboriginal Corporation and South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools, in consultation with Kaurna Elder Uncle Lewis O’Brien.
