The Spirit Men at Nalangkuluru

Wilangarra, Northern Territory - 2019

Nalangkulurru once was the country of the Wilangarra people.

By 1901, due to frontier violence, there were very few Wilangarra left alive. Today, no one remembers what this language sounded like. When all the Wilangarra people were killed the Marra, Gudanji and Yanyuwa people took on the responsibility of looking after Wilangarra country, and looked after the knowledge of Nalangkulurru.

This animation is to remember the Wilangarra people and the old men who held on to and cared for the Law of this country.

Animating country sometimes leads us to a deep understanding of the effects of colonial violence. This animation about a place called Nalangkulurru was once Wilangarra country, there are no Wilangarra people left alive, they were all dead by the early 1900s, we don’t even know what the language sounded like, but the elders of the Gudanji, Marra and Yanyuwa people remember the story for this place.
